Shadow & Fae (S&F) was born of my own desire for a ruleset that learned from both the old school and the new. Modern games like 5E are easy to pick up and understand, but often suffer from “bloat” both in design and in player character power. Meanwhile, retroclones like Old School Essentials capture some of the lost ideas of the origins of Tabletop RPGS, while reproducing some outdated quirks.

Shadow & Fae was designed with the following goals in mind:

• Use language and concepts familiar to modern players.
• Bring forgotten systems to the table to balance the rules of combat, exploration, and role-playing.
• Keep rules simple, clean, and clear.
• Invite players to find creative, plausible solutions to the challenges they face.
